Terms of Use

These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your access to and use of bikelanebumps.org and the BumpWatch Apple Watch app (together, "BumpWatch," "we," "us," or "our"), operated by Jeff Schoellerman. By using the website or the app, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use them.

1. What BumpWatch Is

BumpWatch is a community-sourced project: a Watch app that logs bike-lane bumps as you ride, and a website that maps everything anyone has submitted. It's built and run by a single developer, not a company, and there's no account system on either side.

2. Using the Watch App

BumpWatch needs Location, Motion, and Health permissions to record a ride — you'll be asked to approve these the first time you use it, and you can withdraw them at any time in your Watch or iPhone's Settings, which will stop the app from being able to record. By recording and uploading a ride, you agree that its data — including exact GPS locations — becomes public on this website, as described in the Privacy Policy.

BumpWatch is a data-logging tool, not a safety device. It doesn't warn you about hazards in real time, and using it is never a substitute for riding attentively and using your own judgment about road conditions, traffic, and your surroundings.

3. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Submit falsified, spoofed, or deliberately inaccurate ride or bump data;
  • Attempt to disrupt, overload, or gain unauthorized access to the app's backend services; or
  • Use data scraped from this site in any way that's unlawful or that misrepresents its source.

4. The Data on This Site

The heatmap and stats on bikelanebumps.org are built entirely from rider-submitted data. We don't independently verify the accuracy, completeness, or currency of any bump or ride shown on the map, and road conditions can change at any time after data is recorded. Don't treat the map as an official or authoritative source on road conditions — for that, contact your local public works department.

5. Intellectual Property

The bikelanebumps.org name, logo, and site design, and the BumpWatch app, belong to Jeff Schoellerman. Map tiles are provided by CARTO, built on data from OpenStreetMap contributors, and are used under their respective terms and attribution requirements.

6. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability

bikelanebumps.org and BumpWatch are provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we aren't liable for any damages — including injury, property damage, or damages arising from reliance on data shown on this site — arising from your use of the website or the app, or from riding a bike at all.

7. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll update the effective date above. Continued use after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.

8. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
